The 2009 Haut‑Bailly is a resonant and expressive Bordeaux, showing aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, tobacco leaf, and cassis, with underbrush and mineral nuance. On the palate it is full-bodied yet graceful, with structured but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a concentrated core of dark fruit layered over mineral tension. The finish is long,
Château Haut‑Bailly is a prestigious estate in the Pessac‑Léognan appellation of Graves, classified among the “Crus Classés” for red wine in 1953 and 1959. For centuries the estate has balanced tradition and innovation, and under the ownership of Robert G. Wilmers (from 1998 onward) and the leadership of Veronique Sanders, it has undergone significant modernization—vineyard renewal, cellar upgrades, and careful attention to terroir expression. The vineyard spans ~30‑40 hectares, planted largely to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot on gravelly, sandy, and sandstone soils over limestone—soils ideal for drainage and minerality. Haut‑Bailly’s winemaking focuses on precision: careful sorting, parcel-based vinification, and élevage in French oak (with varying percentages of new oak depending on vintage). The result is a style marked by elegance, refined power, and the ability to evolve gracefully over decades.
