With winemaking roots that stretch back to the fourteenth century, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux's Pessac-Leognan appellation. Smith Haut Lafitte gets its name in part from Verrier Du Boscq, who planted vines on a gravelly plateau named Lafitte in 1365, and in part from Georges Smith, who purchased the estate in 1720 and stamped his purchase with the addition of his name. The modern era of Smith Haut Lafitte began in 1990 when Daniel and Florence Cathiard, former Olympic skiing champions, bought the estate and began on a holistic renovation program, which included taking the estate's 170 acres organic, modernizing its cellar equipment, designing special ergonomic hods for transporting grapes to the cellar, and bringing on renowned consulting winemaker Michel Rolland.
