The 2018 Francia is 100 % Nebbiolo, fermented with native yeasts and aged in large oak casks (botti).  Aromatically it offers dark cherry, tar, rose, licorice, grilled herb, and spice notes, with a touch of minerality and upward lift.  On the palate it is structured, linear, and pointed—the tannins are firm and the finish long, but its mid-palate still has youthful tension and a core of red fruit.  It’s a wine of power and precision that clearly demands patience—its true greatness will reveal itself over many years. 

Giacomo Conterno is a legendary, ultra-traditional Barolo estate based in Monforte d’Alba / Serralunga d’Alba, known for making some of the most long-lived, terroir-pure Nebbiolo in Piedmont.  The estate places heavy emphasis on site, vine age, slow, careful fermentations, long macerations, and extended aging in large oak casks (botti), all aimed at producing wines of depth, structure, and grace over decades.  Their signature single-vineyard bottlings such as Cascina Francia (often labeled Francia) reflect the finest fruit from their own holdings and only appear in vintages deemed exceptional.  Under Roberto Conterno, the estate has upheld these traditions while refining consistency and vineyard expression.  The estate’s wines are benchmarks for traditional Barolo—and Francia is often viewed as among its purest and most compelling expressions.
