The 1943 Barolo Monfortino Riserva is a wartime relic and one of the rarest bottles ever produced by Giacomo Conterno. Crafted in the most austere of conditions, it nevertheless upholds the Monfortino hallmark—long maceration, natural fermentation, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks. After more than 80 years, the wine has evolved into a profound tapestry of tertiary complexity: dried cherry, rose petal, autumn leaves, leather, balsamic herbs, and subtle truffle. The palate is feather-light yet endlessly persistent, with fine, resolved tannins and a haunting, ethereal finish.
Founded in 1908 in Monforte d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno is synonymous with the pinnacle of traditional Barolo. The winery rose to global fame under Giacomo and later his son, Giovanni Conterno, whose steadfast belief in uncompromising quality shaped its legendary status. Today, under Roberto Conterno, the estate continues to craft wines of extraordinary purity and longevity from premier Nebbiolo vineyards, notably the Cascina Francia and Arione crus. The hallmark Monfortino Riserva, first produced in 1924, is made only in the most exceptional vintages and represents the most powerful, long-lived expression of Nebbiolo, revered by collectors and critics alike.
