Monfortino: It introduced the world to traditional Barolo and has gone on to become what is arguably the consummate expression of the Nebbiolo grape— irrespective of stylistic orientation (i.e., traditional or modern). Giacomo Conterno revolutionized the very concept of Barolo with the 1920 debut of his Barolo Riserva, which he subsequently christened Monfortino. Regarded as the most significant Barolo on the collector’s market, Monfortino undergoes longer maceration and maturation periods than those accorded any other Barolo. Between the years of 1959 and 2000, it made only 22 out of a possible 41 appearances, averaging less than 600 cases in each vintage.
Cantina Conterno began in 1908 when Grandfather Giovanni Conterno started making wines. While not technically labeled Monfortino at the time, the now legendary riserva was born in 1915 when Giovanni placed emphasis on premium quality Barolo made only in great vintages with long fermentation and aging periods to create the best aging potential. This philosophy was inherited and taken to astronomical heights by his son Giacomo.
