The 2007 Clos de la Roche from Ponsot (Vieilles Vignes) opens with an intense bouquet of black plum, truffle, venison, and graphite, layered beneath hints of cedar, sanguine herbs, and the darkest cherries. On the palate it is full‑bodied and deeply structured, with notable tannic backbone and vibrant acidity that lifts the dark fruit and minerals into a sustained finish. There’s a striking sense of soil and terroir: the iron‑rich marl and stony substrata of the Morey‑Saint‑Denis slope sing through every sip. Though showing early allure, the wine clearly remains in its developmental phase, promising decades of evolution ahead. Rich, layered, and profound, this is an exceptional expression of old‑vine Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s elite tier.
Domaine Ponsot, founded in 1872 and located in Morey‑Saint‑Denis in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, remains entirely family‑owned and fiercely independent. The estate quietly adheres to traditional methods: grapes are hand‑picked, often destemmed variably, pressed gently, and aged in old oak barrels—long macerations and minimal sulphur are the norm. Ponsot’s signature wines such as Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes and Clos St Denis make up a tiny fraction of production yet command enormous respect. Their vineyards include three of the original almost‑monopole hectares in Clos de la Roche. The estate was also central in exposing counterfeit Burgundy in the 2010s, showing their deep connection to authenticity and provenance. Over generations they’ve cultivated a style that marries raw terroir intensity with refined finesse—wines built for the long haul.
