The 2013 Riserva is a lighter-bodied, intensely aromatic expression of Nebbiolo. It offers delicate but vivid notes of dried rose and red berries, with a refined, pure profile that reflects Gea’s minimal-intervention approach. Despite its elegance, the wine carries firm, edgy tannins with brisk acidity—traits that suggest both energy and aging potential. One reviewer observed “macerated black cherries and spices with a fine, but very firm, line of tannin” . Another noted that while beautifully pure, it also carries a warmth and edgy tension unique to Piedmont’s cooler vintages .
Fabio Gea stands alone in Barbaresco as a fiercely independent and deeply artisanal winemaker. A trained geologist, he revitalized his grandfather Nòtu’s tiny, biodiverse vineyards—less than a hectare boasting multiple Nebbiolo strains alongside Dolcetto, Barbera, Grignolino, and even fruit trees to foster ecology. Gea’s winemaking is similarly distinctive: spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration, and aging in concrete, oak, and even porcelain, combined with handmade labels and pencil numbering. The Riserva named Notù Andava a Tartufi Senza Il Cane (“Grandpa Went Truffle-Hunting Without the Dog”) pays homage to lineage and terroir with poetic precision .
