The 2023 IDDA Etna Bianco is a luminous and finely etched white wine made primarily from Carricante, a native Sicilian grape known for its naturally high acidity and capacity to express volcanic terroir with clarity and finesse. Fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and large oak casks, the wine emphasizes purity and structure over opulence. The 2023 vintage, marked by a balanced growing season with cool nights and extended ripening, delivers a wine of remarkable vibrancy. Aromas of lemon zest, green apple, white peach, fennel, and crushed rock emerge on the nose, along with subtle floral and saline undertones. On the palate, it is taut and linear, with racy acidity, elegant texture, and a long, stony finish that reflects the unique minerality of Etna’s volcanic soils. While approachable young, the wine has the structure to evolve over 5–8 years. An ideal pairing for seafood crudo, grilled octopus, or creamy risotto, IDDA Etna Bianco captures the elegance
IDDA is a collaborative project between Angelo Gaja, the iconic Barbaresco-based winemaker, and Alberto Graci, a leading figure in Sicily’s modern viticultural renaissance. The project was launched in 2017 on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, one of Italy’s most thrilling and extreme wine regions. “IDDA,” meaning she in Sicilian dialect, is a local reference to the volcano itself—alive, powerful, and ever-present. The partnership combines Gaja’s generational mastery of site expression with Graci’s deep local knowledge and respect for Etna’s terroir. The vineyards sit on the south and southwest slopes of the mountain, at elevations between 600 and 800 meters, where volcanic soils, intense sunlight, and dramatic day-night temperature swings yield wines of tension, purity, and striking minerality. The focus is on native varieties—Carricante for the Bianco, and Nerello Mascalese for the Rosso—crafted with minimal intervention to highlight the soul of the mountain.
