This 2024 “Montalto” bottling comes from a small 2‑hectare parcel on the southern slopes (900‑975 m elevation) planted with 60–90‑year‑old Carricante vines on loose volcanic ash with small stones. Aromatically it opens with lemon zest, white peach, crushed stone, and wild herbs, followed by a palate that is lively, textural, and sharply mineral‑laden. Bright acidity, saline tension, and a fine mid‑palate richness lead into a long, chalky finish framed with subtle spice and orchard fruit. Drink now with some decanting or cellar for 8‑10 years to enjoy its evolution.
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a pioneering estate on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, led by Marc de Grazia. Cultivating high‑altitude volcanic vineyards (many above 900 m) on ash‑ and pumice‑rich soils, the estate uses organic viticulture, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a strong sense of terroir. Their “Vigne Niche” bottlings—from exceptionally old, low‑yield parcels—are among Italy’s premier expressions of Carricante and Nerello Mascalese, built for both texture and finesse.
