The 2009 Saint-Romain Rouge is a generous and sun-kissed expression of Pinot Noir from a warm, ripe vintage. It opens with aromas of black cherry, raspberry compote, and dried rose, layered with hints of tea leaf and forest spice. The warmth of the vintage brings plush fruit and supple tannins, yet the wine retains Saint-Romain’s hallmark freshness and mineral lift. With bottle age, it reveals notes of leather, dried herbs, and a gentle earthiness, all wrapped in a silky, seamless texture. This is an evolved and charming red Burgundy, perfect for drinking now with roasted poultry, game birds, or earthy vegetable dishes.
Alain Gras is the leading voice of Saint-Romain, a high-altitude village in the Côte de Beaune long considered off the beaten path. Since founding his domaine in 1979, Alain has passionately showcased the potential of this terroir, which lies on limestone slopes at elevations higher than neighboring Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. The cooler climate and rocky soils yield wines of purity, lift, and finesse. Gras employs sustainable viticulture and hand-harvesting, with minimal intervention in the cellar to allow terroir to shine through. His reds and whites have developed a cult following for their value and expressiveness, often rivaling more famous appellations. Alain’s son Arthur now works alongside him, ensuring continuity while bringing a youthful energy to the domaine’s evolving legacy.
