The 2021 Château d’Ampuis pours deep and intense, showing aromas of blackberry, prune, spice, smoked meat, and a subtle hint of vanilla. On the palate it is full, structured and layered, with firm tannins, fresh acidity, and dark fruit that lingers toward a long, smoky finish. It is a wine that balances power and grace now, but clearly has years—if not decades—ahead of it to evolve.
E. Guigal, based in Ampuis in the Northern Rhône, is one of the most celebrated Rhône houses, having elevated Côte-Rôtie to international prestige with its “La La” trio (La Mouline, La Turque, La Landonne). Guigal acquired the historic Château d’Ampuis site in 1995 and restored it as a symbolic focus for their Côte-Rôtie program. The “Château d’Ampuis” cuvée blends grapes from seven premier lieux-dits across both Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, parcels adjacent to Guigal’s single-vineyard estates. The blend is roughly 93 % Syrah with 7 % Viognier, and vinified in the same style as Guigal’s top crus: extended maceration, careful extraction, and maturation in new oak barrels. Guigal’s philosophy is to balance power with elegance, extracting the maximum depth from Rhône terroir while preserving perfume, structure, and longevity.
