“Lume Spento” is a name tied to the highest vineyard parcels (Passo del Lume Spento) in Le Ragnaie’s holdings, at high altitude ~530–621 m. The wine is made in the same style (native yeast, long maceration, aging in botti) but with the tension and freshness that comes from altitude. 2020 was a warm but balanced year; at high altitude, the site felt moderate heat. Le Ragnaie is one of Montalcino’s most compelling estates, founded by Riccardo Campinoti and known for an artisanal, high-altitude approach to Sangiovese. The winery sits at one of the highest elevations in the appellation, with vineyards spanning diverse altitudes and expositions, including old vines in the fabled Montosoli cru. Campinoti practices organic viticulture, long macerations, and large-format aging to preserve purity and terroir. His wines express elegance over power, with a rare combination of structure, lift, and soulful depth that has captivated purists and collectors alike. Le Ragnaie is now firmly established among the new classics of Montalcino.
