This 2007 Reserva shows a refined, classic Rioja profile with 75% Tempranillo, supplemented by Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. The nose offers reserved but complex aromas of dried cherry, cedar, leather, tobacco, wild herbs, and a whisper of forest floor. On the palate it’s dry and medium-bodied, with firm, polished tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish balancing fruit, earth, and spice. Bottled after years of barrel aging (six years in oak) and further cellar age, it’s drinking beautifully now but has many more years ahead.
Founded in 1877 in Haro, Rioja Alta, López de Heredia is one of the most traditional and respected names in Spanish wine. The estate still practices very long aging, using large American oak barrels, multiple rackings, and conservative winemaking to emphasize patience, structure, and terroir over trend. Its Viña Tondonia line is iconic—red, white, and rosé wines that often stay in barrel and bottle for many years before release. Ownership remains in the López de Heredia family, which ensures continuity of style and method: bush-trained vines, indigenous yeasts, careful selection, and a deep respect for vintage and vineyard. Viña Tondonia’s wines are widely admired for their ability to evolve slowly, gain complexity without losing elegance, and reflect a classic Rioja framework.
