The 2023 “Clos des Ducs” presents a bright garnet hue and a deeply perfumed bouquet of wild cherry, red currant, violet petal and dried rose leaf, layered with soft cedar, graphite dust and crushed limestone. On the palate it is medium‐to‐full bodied yet astonishingly graceful, with vibrant acidity framing a core of red‑berry fruit, while fine chalky tannins provide structure without weight. The mid‐palate reveals pomegranate skin, gentle tobacco leaf, marjoram and poised mineral lines—evidence of this vineyard’s distinctive limestone scree soils. The finish is long and refined—echoing cherry pit, sweet spice and saline minerality, leaving a lingering impression of purity and depth. While already approachable with modest decanting, this wine is built to evolve: it promises graceful complexity over the next 10‑15 years (and beyond) in a well‑conditioned cellar.
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, led by Guillaume and Margot d’Angerville in Volnay, is a benchmark estate recognized for its commitment to terroir, precision and elegance. Their estate is entirely organically and biodynamically farmed, with ultra‑low yields and minimal intervention — the aim being to let the vineyard speak rather than winemaking overshadow. Among their holdings is the revered monopole 1er Cru vineyard “Clos des Ducs,” exclusively owned and cultivated by the estate, planted to a unique “Pinot d’Angerville” clone that emphasises purity and restraint. The vinification is subtle: full destemming, gentle maceration, low new‑oak (typically ~25%) and ageing in predominately used barrels, resulting in wines that combine power, finesse and clarity. Collectors value the domaine for its consistency and the manner in which even its top crus express precision rather than extraction.
