The 2009 Taurasi Radici Riserva reveals a wine of both richness and finesse, shaped by a warm yet balanced vintage. On the nose, it opens with deep aromas of black cherry, plum, and dried blackberry, layered with notes of leather, espresso, dark chocolate, and a volcanic smokiness. Subtle accents of tobacco, balsamic herbs, and spices give it additional depth. The palate is full-bodied and commanding, with firm yet polished tannins that frame the wine’s dense core of dark fruit. Its acidity provides lift, keeping the wine vibrant despite its power. The finish is long and authoritative, marked by lingering flavors of blackcurrant, licorice, and savory minerality. A wine built for decades of aging, the 2009 Riserva already shows remarkable harmony, with the promise of even greater complexity as it evolves.
Mastroberardino is widely regarded as the historic custodian of Campania’s indigenous grapes, and no wine exemplifies their legacy more than Radici Taurasi Riserva. Founded in the 1870s, the estate has been instrumental in safeguarding Aglianico’s reputation as the “Barolo of the South.” The Radici line, first produced in 1986, represents the highest expression of Taurasi, crafted from meticulously selected grapes grown on volcanic and calcareous soils in Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano. These conditions produce wines of profound structure, remarkable longevity, and unmistakable terroir character.
