Vintages like 1988 are extremely rare. The 1988 Le Pergole Torte is a standout vintage: it opens with deep dark‑cherry and plum fruit, elegant violet and lavender florals, along with smoke, licorice and a slate‑mineral thread.  On the palate the wine is medium‑to‑full‑bodied yet refined, offering fresh red/black fruit, bright acidity, firm but polished tannins and a core of crushed stone minerality driving through to a long finish.  Mid‑palate nuance reveals tobacco leaf, cedar, dried herbs and a faint sanguine hint, all wrapped in a sense of energy and vertical structure despite age. The finish lingers with cherry pit, iron‑flesh minerality and a whisper of bramble.  The 3‑litre format enhances its long‑term potential and aids tertiary development—this is a collectible bottle built for decades more of evolution. Given its pedigree, vintage and format, this bottle is rare, highly sought‑after and best enjoyed with decanting to uncover its still‑vibrant expression.

Montevertine Description

Montevertine sits on a hilltop in Radda in Chianti, planted to old vines of Sangiovese (and small amounts of Canaiolo/Colorino in early years), with soils of galestro and alberese at elevation around 425 m.  The estate was founded by Sergio Manetti in 1967 and championed 100% Sangiovese at a time when blending was the norm—he even exited the Chianti Classico consortium to pursue purity.  The winemaking has remained remarkably consistent: wild‑yeast fermentation in cement vats, aging in French oak for approximately 24 months, minimal intervention and a focus on terroir, elegance and age‑worthiness.  Martino Manetti successor of Sergio, together with cellar master Bruno Bini and consulting oenologist Paolo Salvi, have preserved the estate’s style and vision.  Le Pergole Torte has achieved icon status, widely considered a benchmark for pure Sangiovese and one of Italy’s great wines of aging potential.
