The 2017 Montevertine Rosso presents a vivid garnet hue and opens with commanding aromatics of black cherry, wild plum, violet, pressed herbs and smoke‑tinged earth. On the palate it is full‑bodied yet finely textured, with deep red and black fruit at the core, firm but graceful tannins and vibrant acidity that give the wine energy and lift. Mid‑palate complexity emerges with cedar, tobacco leaf and mineral‑driven slate that underline the vineyard’s terroir. The finish is long and persistent, weaving layers of dark fruit, licorice, and graphite while never losing a sense of elegance. Although immediately impressive, this 3 L format amplifies ageing potential—expect it to evolve gracefully over the next 15‑20 years while rewarding early decanting today.

Montevertine, perched high in the Radda in Chianti zone of Tuscany, was established by Sergio Manetti and remains a family‑run estate committed to pure Sangiovese expression. The vineyards sit on galestro and sandstone soils at elevations often above 400 m, imparting both freshness and structure to the wines. Montevertine eschewed DOCG constraints decades ago in favour of freedom to craft site‑driven wines under the Toscana IGT banner. Their viticulture is rigorous—old vines, low yields, native yeast fermentation and ageing in large formats and old oak to preserve clarity and elegance. Montevertine’s “Rosso” bottling, though less heralded than the flagship Le Pergole Torte, delivers remarkable precision, depth and authenticity from one of Tuscany’s most respected producers.
