Overture is a wine born of multiple vintages, selecting lots that didn’t go into the flagship Opus One blend but nonetheless reflect the estate’s character. It tends to show prominent dark fruit—blackberry, blueberry, cassis—alongside red fruit tones (cherry, red currant), florals like violet or dried rose petal, and earthy/herbal undernotes. The wine is designed to be more approachable in its youth than Opus One, with supple, softened tannins and a creamy texture, yet still enough structure, acidity, and oak influence (French oak barrels) to give it depth and longevity. On the palate you’ll often find cocoa or dark chocolate, licorice, subtle spice, and a long, balanced finish that lingers.
Opus One is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic joint ventures, born from the collaboration of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Established in 1978, it set out to make a Bordeaux‑style wine in California with exacting standards: exceptional vineyard sites in Oakville‑To‑Kalon, rigorous vineyard and cellar work, and a philosophy that balances power with elegance. The estate grows its classic Bordeaux varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and a touch of Malbec—on deeply alluvial soils with diverse exposures and elevations. Opus One is known for its flagship wine, but since 1993 it has also produced Overture, its “second wine,” which allows more flexibility in vintage blending and selection, and is crafted with many of the same care, precision, and attention to terroir that define their top cuvée.
