The 2016 Pavie‑Macquin opens with a deep garnet‑purple hue and an intense perfume of black cherry, blackberry, wild blueberry, rose petal, cedar chest and white truffle, threaded with graphite and baking spices. On the palate it is medium‑to‑full‑bodied, delivering silky yet firm tannins and a core of dark red and black fruit that is both plush and finely tuned. Underlying minerality—chalk, crushed stone and subtle iron notes—lends lift and structure, while the oak is seamlessly integrated and supports the fruit without dominating it. The finish is long, pure and refined, showing eucalyptus, licorice, and a saline thread that anchors the sweetness of the fruit. This is widely regarded as one of the finest vintages for the estate, with reviewers suggesting it will evolve beautifully through the 2030s into the 2040s and beyond.
Château Pavie‑Macquin, located on the upper plateau of the Saint‑Émilion appellation, is a Premier Grand Cru Classé B estate renowned for its limestone‑rich terroir and meticulous viticulture. Under the supervision of winemaker Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, the estate emphasises low yields, vine density, careful sorting and a blend of modern and traditional techniques. With vines planted predominantly to Merlot (typically over 80 %), supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Pavie‑Macquin’s style combines generosity of fruit with profound minerality and aging potential. The estate’s recent conversions to more organic and biodynamic practices reflect its commitment to long‑term sustainability and terroir expression.
