The 2017 Grange is a commanding expression of Shiraz (97%) with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and Magill Estate. It spent 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads, imparting signature notes of mocha, vanilla, and roasted spices. In the glass, it opens with dense layers of black plum, licorice, smoked meats, and graphite, evolving with air into more exotic spice, espresso, and dark floral tones. Despite the cool vintage, it delivers immense concentration, velvety tannins, and a deeply structured finish. A monumental Grange built for the long haul, with decades of evolution ahead.
Penfolds stands as the defining icon of Australian winemaking. Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, the estate has shaped the identity of fine wine in Australia for over a century and a half. Located in South Australia, Penfolds built its reputation on experimentation, blending innovation with deep respect for tradition. While known for a broad portfolio, its flagship, Grange, revolutionized perceptions of Australian wine when first released commercially in the 1950s by Max Schubert. It introduced a Bordeaux-like model of aging potential, blended across top vineyard sources, but with a Shiraz-led Australian identity. Over the decades, Penfolds has remained committed to precise viticulture, multi-regional blending, and extended aging to craft wines of power, polish, and global prestige.
