From mature fruit and age, this 1996 displays a deeply evolved bouquet of dried cherry, leather, truffle, cedar, and forest floor, with touches of tar and tobacco. On the palate it remains elegant and balanced—silky tannins frame red and earthy notes, with dried herbs, mineral tension, and a lingering savory finish. Cellar notes mention “nose is all dried red fruits and flowers with gentle vanilla and cedar … underpinned by subtle leather, white mushrooms and potting soil.”
Rocche dei Manzoni is a grower in Monforte d’Alba, Piedmont, whose wines increasingly draw attention for their respect for terroir, traditional techniques, and patience in aging. The “Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano” parcel lies in the Perno sector of Barolo, known for red marl soils over limestone, giving wines finesse and tension. Their winemaking approach tends toward classic Barolo: long maceration, aging in large oak casks, and gradual evolution in bottle. Over time, their bottlings have gained nuance and aging stability while retaining a certain austerity and structure.
