Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: For IWM, it is a welcomed departure from the warmer vintages of 2015 and 2017, and even the more powerful and structured year of 2016! The reality is Sassicaia makes a unique and exceptional wine in any vintage - Mother Nature dictates the style of the release, not the cellar. In 2018, we got just that, a classic and refined Sassicaia from a cooler and long growing season with characteristics that recall some of the glories of 2004. The Cabernet Sauvignon, and especially "the grapes from the older vines on the highest hills in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri, reached a perfect balance in terms of ripeness."For IWM, the results were apparent with the earlier release of the sibling Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto and we screamed about how refined the younger sibling was from 2018. Well, the media has echoed these opinions and are calling the year "classic,"further stating that this is "textbook Sassicaia."
Singularly responsible for launching the Super-Tuscan movement, San Guido's Sassicaia-a masterful cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc-is one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Mario Incisa della Rochetta, along with guidance from Giacomo Tachis (Piero Antinori's winemaker), made enological history and created the Super Tuscan movement when, in 1968, his estate released Sassicaia to great critical acclaim. Believing Toscano was ripe for change, Rochetta in 1944 planted Cabernet Sauvignon at Tenuta San Guido, his small vineyard in the Bolgheri hills. The terrain, similar to that of Graves in Bordeaux, at Tenuta San Guido gave Sassicaia its name, which in the Tuscan dialect means "stony ground."Today Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta continues the tradition at the Tenuta San Guido estate, where he continues to produce the most elegant Super Tuscan there is!
