The 2017 SLOAN Proprietary Red is a Bordeaux‑style blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) that delivers impressive depth with elegance. On the nose it shows rich dark fruits—blackberry, black currant—alongside notes of chocolate, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and gravelly mineral tones. The palate is plush and full‑bodied, with polished yet firm tannins, balancing acidity, and layers of fruit and exotic spice. Despite its intensity, it carries a refined texture and freshness that prevents it from feeling over‑ripe.Critics have praised its structure and aging potential: “dense purple/plum‑hued, with a gorgeous, Graves‑like nose … full‑bodied richness, polished, elegant texture … sweet tannins and a great finish” — Jeb Dunnuck, predicting it will drink well for 20‑25 years.  Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also scores it 96+, calling out its “open‑knit, compelling scents … opulent black fruit preserves … layers of exot

Sloan Description

SLOAN Estate sits on the eastern hillsides of Rutherford in Napa Valley, in a rocky, well‑drained site that ranges in elevation from about 875 to nearly 1,000 feet. The soils are fractured volcanic rock, sandy loam, with white tufa and other mineral components—soils that stress the vines and confer structure, tension, and minerality. The estate is fairly small, producing its flagship Proprietary Red along with the “Asterisk” second label. Winemaker Martha McClellan, along with consultant Michel Rolland, emphasizes precision: hand‑harvested fruit, cold soaks, extended macerations, selective barrel aging (often a high portion of new French oak), and attentive élevage to preserve freshness as well as power. The winemaking goal is a wine that expresses Rutherford’s terroir clearly: elegance plus intensity, purity plus aging potential. Soil, exposure, day‑night temperature swing, and vineyard management are all leveraged to produce a wine that can age two decades or more, yet
