The 2018 SLOAN Proprietary Red is widely regarded as a standout vintage for the estate: rich, dramatic, and full‑bodied, yet with striking energy and precision. On the nose expect black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, tobacco leaf, and a backbone of gravelly earth. The palate offers dense black and blue fruit, firm but ripe tannins, lush oak that supports rather than overpowers, and a lingering mineral‑tinged finish. It has structure for long aging—30‑40 years is often cited for peak development—but even in its youth demands decanting to show its layers of complexity.
SLOAN Estate sits on the eastern hillsides of Rutherford in Napa Valley, on about 40 hillside acres, of which ~13 acres are planted to vines. The vineyard was established in 1997 and is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The soils are fractured volcanic rock, sandy loam, and white tufa, offering superb drainage and lots of minerality. Winemaking is led by Martha McClellan, with guidance from Michel Rolland; they employ low yields, hand harvesting, barrel fermentation, extended maceration, and mature in new French oak to balance structure and elegance. The estate’s micro‑climate—cooler nights, exposure to valley breezes, elevation near 875‑1,000 ft—helps achieve both physiological ripeness and freshness.
