This 2023 vintage from the “Guardiola” cru is built on 100% Nerello Mascalese sourced from vines at 900‑1,000 m elevation on sand and basaltic pebbles with little ash. On the nose: an intense bouquet of crushed rocks, wild herbs, rose petals, lavender, and sour cherry, layered with ash‑derived minerality and a smoky edge. On the palate: sleek yet dense, with perfumed red and black fruits, graphite‑like tension, firm dusty tannins and a long, licorice and mineral‑tinged finish. This is a wine of impressive power and purity—already showing glimpses of approachability but built for extended cellaring (best from 2026 onward).
Located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Tenuta delle Terre Nere is heralded as one of the most visionary estates of the region. Founded by Marco de Grazia, the estate crafts wines rooted in volcanic terroir at elevations rarely matched elsewhere. Their vineyard holdings span high‑altitude plots (600‑1000 meters above sea level) on ash, pumice, and basalt soils, and many vines are between 90‑120 years old. The municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia houses their renowned “Guardiola” cru on the steepest terraces, where yields are minimal and vineyard work is entirely manual. Their approach is organic, with minimal intervention in the cellar—native yeasts, gentle extraction, aging in French oak barriques and tonneaux—and a focus on deriving elegance, minerality, and site‑expression rather than overt power.
