The 1999 Barolo Cerequio is a masterful expression of both site and vintage. The nose opens with evolved yet vibrant aromas of dark cherry, dried plum, and cassis, layered with violets, rose petal, tobacco, truffle, and licorice. On the palate, it strikes a balance between concentration and finesse—polished tannins frame a core of ripe dark fruit, while refreshing acidity lifts the wine, giving it precision and energy even after two decades. Secondary notes of leather, balsamic herbs, and earthy minerality add depth, leading into a long, graceful finish. The 1999 vintage, celebrated for its structure and classic character, has allowed this wine to evolve into a profound, harmonious expression—still vibrant, with years of potential ahead.
Roberto Voerzio, based in La Morra, is widely regarded as one of Barolo’s most meticulous and visionary producers. His estate philosophy is built on radical yield reduction, often cutting bunches so drastically that only one per vine remains, yielding fruit of incredible concentration and purity. His holdings include some of Barolo’s most prized crus—Brunate, Rocche dell’Annunziata, Case Nere, and Cerequio. The Cerequio vineyard, located between La Morra and Barolo, is known as one of the “grand crus” of the region, producing wines of immense elegance, layered aromatics, and a hallmark silkiness. Voerzio’s interpretation of Cerequio is often considered one of the finest, combining power with refinement and showcasing extraordinary longevity.
