The 1999 Barolo La Serra is a beautifully matured wine from a vintage celebrated for its structure and classic character. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with aromas of dried cherry, raspberry, and plum evolving into notes of rose petal, truffle, licorice, and tobacco. On the palate, it is firm yet refined, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that frames the evolved fruit. Earthy undertones, mineral accents, and hints of spice add depth, while the finish is long and persistent, echoing savory and floral notes. At over two decades of age, the 1999 La Serra shows both the finesse of its terroir and the longevity of Voerzio’s style—harmonious, nuanced, and at peak maturity, though it can continue to hold for years.
Roberto Voerzio, based in La Morra, is one of Barolo’s most acclaimed modernist producers, renowned for his obsessive attention to vineyard management and his philosophy of drastically reducing yields to create intensely concentrated wines. His portfolio features some of Barolo’s greatest crus, including Brunate, Cerequio, Rocche dell’Annunziata, and La Serra. La Serra is a high-altitude vineyard above La Morra, prized for its cooler exposure and sandy, calcareous soils. These conditions give the wines lifted aromatics, precision, and a more linear, mineral-driven style compared to some of Voerzio’s denser crus. The result is Barolo with elegance, energy, and remarkable aging potential.
