The 2016 Montebuono is darker, firmer, and more contemplative than its Barbacarlo sibling. Made from a similar blend—primarily Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta—it is vinified with native yeasts, partial whole clusters, and aged in old Slavonian oak, resulting in a wine of power and tension. It opens with aromas of wild cherry, plum skin, forest herbs, and iron-rich earth, with undertones of smoke and dried violets. On the palate, it’s tightly coiled yet profound, showing firm tannins, layered minerality, and a whisper of effervescence that adds lift to its brooding core. Age-worthy and emotionally charged, Montebuono is a wine for the patient and the curious — a cult expression of terroir that rewards the willing with truth in a glass.
Lino Maga remains one of Italy’s most mythical and fiercely independent winemakers, known for crafting wines that are wholly singular and deeply expressive of place. Working from his monopole vineyard in the hills of Oltrepò Pavese, Maga produced only two wines—Barbacarlo and Montebuono—both field blends from ancient vines grown on a single hillside. Eschewing modern techniques, he embraced wild fermentation, avoided filtration, and bottled with residual sugar, resulting in naturally lively, soul-stirring wines that defy categorization. To drink a Lino Maga wine is to be transported—geographically, emotionally, even philosophically—into the heart of rural, uncompromising, old-world Italy.
