The 2020 vintage opens with a reserved nose of black cherry skin, crushed rocks, dried sage, and iron-rich earth. On the palate, it is coiled and precise, offering sinewy tannins, taut acidity, and a tension that demands time and air. There’s a whisper of wild herbs and forest floor behind the fruit, and the slight sparkle adds lift and intrigue. Though still in its infancy, Montebuono 2020 already shows flashes of the timeless personality that has earned Maga’s wines cult devotion. For the patient drinker, this will unfurl over the next two decades into something profound and unforgettable.
Montebuono 2020 is the most contemplative and structured expression from the legendary Lino Maga estate in Oltrepò Pavese. Sourced from the estate’s namesake monopole vineyard, this rare wine continues the Maga family’s tradition of radical authenticity: hand-harvested grapes from ancient vines, spontaneous fermentation, no chemical intervention, and bottling before fermentation completes—preserving a trace of natural effervescence. Montebuono is the quieter, more austere brother to Barbacarlo, offering a leaner, firmer, and more mineral-driven profile. These are wines that resist simplification—enigmatic and soulful, they speak to those who seek truth in terroir.
