The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo from Cascina Roccalini is a vibrant, focused expression of young Nebbiolo—bright ruby in color, with lifted aromatics of crushed cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, and a touch of balsamic spice. The palate is refined and energetic, showing fine tannins, brisk acidity, and remarkable purity of fruit. Notes of redcurrant, sweet tobacco, and delicate white pepper emerge as the wine opens, finishing with a mineral edge and graceful persistence. While approachable now, it hints at a quiet structure that rewards short-term cellaring. A benchmark Langhe Nebbiolo that punches far above its classification.
Cascina Roccalini is a boutique winery located in the heart of the Roccalini cru in Barbaresco, where Paolo Veglio has quietly built a cult following among Nebbiolo purists. Though his family has owned the land since 1920, Paolo only began bottling under his own label in 2004—prior to that, his fruit was sold to none other than Bruno Giacosa. His philosophy is deeply rooted in minimal intervention: organic practices, low yields, long submerged-cap fermentations in concrete, and aging in large neutral vessels. No fining, no filtration—just a transparent expression of site and vintage. Roccalini’s approach results in wines of clarity, tension, and understated elegance.
