The 2020 vintage opens with a deep garnet‑purple colour and invites the nose with aromas of cassis, blackberries, wild licorice, violet and a subtle sea‑salt/brine note that evokes its Pauillac terroir. On the palate it is medium‑to‑full‑bodied but remarkably poised: lush dark fruit core of black cherry and blueberry, framed by graphite, cedar and fine grain tannins that deliver tension and drive. Minerality enters strongly, with chalky gravel‑driven texture and a saline edge that lifts the finish and prevents any heaviness. Despite its richness, the wine remains fresh and focused—there’s precision in the structure, vibrant acidity and an austerity that suggests long‑life rather than early indulgence. With its blend (77% Cabernet Sauvignon / 17% Merlot / 6% Cabernet Franc) and high proportion of new oak, this is built to evolve over decades, yet it already offers nuanced complexity and depth.
Château Pichon‑Lalande is a historic Second Growth estate located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, and is owned by the Rouzaud family (also proprietors of Champagne Louis Roederer). Its vineyards sit on deep gravel soils with clay‑limestone sub‑soils, planted to a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc—allowing the estate to craft wines known for both power and elegance. In recent years the estate has emphasised precision viticulture, low yields, parcel‑specific vinification and maturation in a high proportion of new French oak, resulting in wines of refined structure, depth and long‑term ageing potential. Pichon‑Lalande’s style is often described as “feminine” in the best sense of that word—sensual, richly textured, yet architecturally built for decades of evolution.
