The 2005 magnum opens with a deep garnet‑ruby hue and a complex bouquet of wild dark cherry, plum compote, violet petal, licorice and cedar chest, underpinned by a powerful minerality of crushed stone and graphite. On the palate it is full‑bodied and richly textured yet retains a sense of elegance—dense fruit layers of black cherry and damson are supported by bright acidity and firm yet silky tannins. Mid‑palate nuance brings in dark cocoa, black tea, dried herb and flint, adding depth and intrigue without excess. The large‑format 1.5 L enhances the wine’s breadth and provides extra ageing potential; while already showing beautifully, it will continue to evolve over the next decade. The finish is long and resonant—echoes of cherry pit, forest floor, iron filings and a lingering chalky minerality that speak to the vineyard’s heart.
Domaine Ponsot, situated in Morey‑Saint‑Denis in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, is an estate held in the highest esteem for its devotion to old‑vine vineyard sites, minimal intervention, and wines that articulate terroir with rare clarity. The estate owns a significant portion of the prestigious Clos de la Roche Grand Cru and uses a traditional winemaking approach—long maceration, large old oak botti, and extremely low yields—to let the vineyard shelf speak first. With its petites production and storied lineage, Ponsot has earned a cult‑following among Burgundy purists, and each bottling becomes a statement of place, patience and purity.
