The 2020 Napanook is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. It opens with a complex bouquet of currants, blackberries, fresh mushrooms, and floral notes. Though growing conditions in 2020 were dry — a winter and spring with below‑average rainfall, followed by heat waves in summer — the wine remains balanced thanks to rigorous selection and vineyard blocks picked at optimal maturity. On the palate it’s medium‑to‑full bodied, with polished, fine tannins and fruit that is ripe but not overblown. Notes of loamy earth, leather, dark cherry, and a mineral backbone support the finish. Critics praise its reserves: James Suckling (95 pts) calls it “ripe fruit with reserve … excellent structure,” while The Wine Advocate (≈92 pts) emphasizes its purity, fine tannins, and compelling balance.
Dominus Estate, under Christian Moueix, is one of Napa Valley’s most respected names for realizing Bordeaux‑style blends with a distinct sense of terroir. The estate is located in Yountville, on the historic Napanook Vineyard — vines that date back to about 1838 — planted on gravelly, well‑drained soils with clay‑loam components. The vineyard is entirely dry‑farmed, emphasizing root depth and soil expression, with meticulous viticultural practices (careful pruning, cluster thinning, selective harvesting) and minimal intervention in the cellar, so fruit, soil, and vintage shine through. The winery infrastructure, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, helps buffer the vines and fermentations from Napa’s extremes of temperature. Dominus’ philosophy: wines that balance power, elegance, and ageability.
