The 2012 Riserva is a mature, sophisticated Nebbiolo shaped by extended maceration (four weeks), followed by years of aging—four to five in oak and an additional six months in porcelain—balancing power with refinement. All destemmed fruit, it exudes an elegant, lifted bouquet of dried rose, bright red berries, and subtle spice, with a full yet impeccably balanced structure. With harmony between fine-grained tannins and polished weight, its lineage shines—expressing soil, tradition, and restraint. At this stage, it is beautifully approachable yet still offers subtle evolution, embodying both the intensity of artisanal Barbaresco and the maturation grace of time.
Fabio Gea is a fiercely independent winemaker in the rolling hills of Barbaresco, forging a truly artisanal path rooted in tradition and innovation. With a background in geology, he revitalized his grandfather Nòtu’s tiny, historically diverse vineyard—less than a hectare but containing massal selections of nearly 15 Nebbiolo strains, along with Dolcetto, Barbera, Grignolino, and fruit trees to foster biodiversity. Gea’s approach is deeply respectful of the land: all cultivation is manual, organic, and pesticide-free. In the cellar, he favors minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation, a blend of concrete, oak, and porcelain vessels, and extraordinary attention to detail—including hand-numbered, handmade-paper labels. His Riserva, “Notù Andava a Tartufi Senza Il Cane,” meaning “Grandpa Went Truffle Hunting Without the Dog,” is a poetic tribute to his ancestry and the singular terroir he so passionately preserves.
