The Ferrando estate covers about 17 acres in the Canavese and Carema DOCs of the northern Piedmont of northwest Italy. Nebbiolo and Barbera grow in the higher foothills, in the shadows of the Alps and Mont Blanc, and Erbaluce for the Ferrandoss white wines grows in the lower lands around their town of Ivrea, where they also run a wine bar. Their vineyards are closer to the Valle d’Aosta than their Piemontese cousins, Barolo and Barbaresco to the south. The Ferrandos have been in the wine business in the northern Piedmont for over one hundred years. They started making their famous Carema from mountain vineyards of Nebbiolo in 1957. Their reputation puts them at the top of winemaking in this part of Piedmont, and they’ve been credited with preserving traditional wines of their area that might have been lost. Today Roberto, son of Luigi, runs the estate, and furthers their traditions.
