The 2021 La Landonne unfolds with aromas of blackberries, smoked meat, licorice, black olive, and cracked pepper, with touches of roast herbs and underbrush. On the palate it is powerful yet controlled: firm, polished tannins frame rich dark fruit and structure, while brightness and minerality keep it focused. Medium-to-full in body with a long, smoky finish, it is already compelling yet has ample years ahead to soften and deepen. According to critics, it may be one of the standout wines of the vintage, with density, depth, and purity that give it exceptional aging potential.
Guigal, based in Ampuis in the Northern Rhône, is one of the most influential and revered houses in French wine. Over multiple generations, the family has acquired and consolidated prime vineyard parcels—including the famous “La La” trio (La Mouline, La Turque, La Landonne)—and become a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie. The La Landonne parcel lies on Côte Brune soils, rich in iron oxide and schist, and is planted to 100 % Syrah with no Viognier co-planting, giving it purity and power. Guigal tends vineyard and cellar operations with meticulous care, using extended macerations, whole clusters when conditions allow, and long élevage (often ~42 months new oak) to build structure without overstepping. Their philosophy is to harness the raw energy of the land, channeling it toward expressive wines that combine intensity, elegance, and longevity. La Landonne often represents the bold, darker, more muscular side of Guigal’s Rhône portfolio, intended for patient cellaring.
