The 2013 Ex Voto opens inky and intense, offering concentrated notes of black fruit liqueur (blackberry, cassis), dark chocolate, roasted coffee, spice, licorice, and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate it is full, muscular, and seamless—deep, structured tannins carry the fruit, with layers of graphite, iron, smoke, and savory earth driving through a long crescendo. Though powerful, the wine is beautifully balanced: acidity and mineral tension lift the darker elements, and time in bottle continues to reveal complexity. Critics praise it for both its force and elegance — with both breadth and finesse, promising decades of further evolution.
E. Guigal, based in Ampuis in the Northern Rhône, is one of the most revered Rhône houses, particularly renowned for its mastery in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Rhône terroirs.
