The 2020 DVO is rich, deep, and remarkably polished. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, cedar, licorice, and leather open the wine, showing both power and refinement. On the palate it’s full‑bodied but not heavy: the tannins are ripe and fine‑grained, acidity balanced and tension evident, offering freshness even in long inflected dark fruit core. There’s a long mocha and spice‑tinged finish, touches of wild herb, and loamy earth that give it depth. Critics have been enthusiastic: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded it 96+, describing it as “admirable suppleness and ripe tannins” with superb structure and freshness.
DVO is a partnership born of the union between Napa Valley’s Dalla Valle Vineyards and Tuscany’s Ornellaia, two wine houses that bring very different strengths to the table. The fruit comes from premier Napa AVAs such as Oakville and Coombsville; the winemaking involves high attention to vineyard selection, careful extraction, and élevage in French oak (roughly 60% new) for extended periods. The philosophy is to marry Old World elegance with New World power—that means structure, aromatic complexity, precise balance, rather than just sheer richness. Statements about weight and finesse are built into every vintage; 2020 is no exception.
