Library Release from the 2015 “Vintage Made By God” and Debut with IWM’s Best-Selling Brunello

Library Release from the 2015 “Vintage Made By God” and Debut with IWM’s Best-Selling Brunello for the Past 25 Years from the Classic 2019 Vintage. “For The Money, There Is Not A Single Better Wine Being Made in Montalcino.” Best Price.

“Brunello from 2016 and Brunello Riserva from 2015 are poised for long-term success…These are career-defining wines for many estates and for the appellation as a whole.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Truth is, it is also better than many far more expensive offerings. These are two Brunellos [Il Poggione Brunello and Brunello Riserva Vigna Paganelli I would buy confidently in any vintage.” – Antonio Galloni, VInous

What is the best-selling Brunello producer at IWM over the past 25 years? No, it’s not Soldera, Valdicava, or even the patriarch himself, Biondi Santi. Hands down, it is Il Poggione. The estate and wines are a fixture of Montalcino, and our Union Square storefront, that uniquely combine approachability with longevity. We simply agree with Antonio Galloni, the Il Poggione Brunello and Brunello Riserva “are two Brunellos I would buy confidently in any vintage.”

As you have heard us preach over the past four months, we simply agree with Eric Guido and his statement “…the current releases from Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation… This is the vintage we’ve all been waiting for… Alessandro Bindocci of Il Poggione compares the weather conditions of 2019 to 2016. While both come across as quite classic, there is more energy and fruit to be found in the 2019 versus the 2016 at the same stage.” Well, in the truly classic vintage of 2019 it is a must buy for the Italian enthusiast and collector, and today we able to share a sneak peek at the 2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino at some of the BEST PRICING in the country and are now passing along the saving to you.

However, that is not the focus of today’s offer; it is the 2015 “vintage made by God” that is a must buy for the Italian collector. Today we are able to share ten cases of the 2015 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli at the BEST PRICE in the country and are now passing along the savings to you!

FEATURED WINE: Debut Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva

Il Poggione is of the patriarchs of Montalcino, in the 1960s it was one of the original estates producing Brunello. The estate goes back to 1890 where it produced olive oil, and there are olive tree on premise that are 200 years old. For the 2019 release, it is a testament to the estate (made famous by the late Pierluigi Talenti who believed Brunello should offer approachability with longevity, defying the forbidding Brunellos of Biondi Santi at the time). Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is produced only in the best vintages and in limited quantity. This wine comes exclusively from "I Paganelli" vineyard, the oldest one in the estate, planted in 1964. Its vines, used as a clonal reference when planting new vineyards, produce high quality grapes which are picked by the individual selection of the best and ripest bunches. The 2015 Brunello, while still needing a little more time, is all about red and black fruit and showcasing the muscular and richer side to Sangiovese from Montalcino; loaded with ripe, almost sweet-like notes of wild berries and sour cherry that fade into a concentrated core that quickly gives way to dry tannins and bright acidity. It has all the stuffing and energy of a perfectly built Sangiovese-based wine.

Additional Notes and Reviews:

“Il Poggione continues to impress for an ability to marry exceptional quality with scale and affordability, making these some of the most consumer-friendly wines on the planet.” –Antonio Galloni

2015 IL POGGIONE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA VIGNA PAGANELLI

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants:  "Simply stated, this is one of the best noses in Montalcino - it is the transporting signature of the estate, and is worth the price of admission alone. Few Brunello are as consistent and this is our Lou Gehrig of Brunello Riserva, and 2015 is no exception. What we love here, in comparison to our other favorites of the vintage, is that the Il Poggione is more sold school in style, more terroir-driven. In fact, this is more Burgundian in style, a little less gravitas, a little more upright and classic in style. Similar to the captivating nose, the signature notes of black cherries, pronounced herbs, tar, baked leather land on the palate with some savory minerality. We had the wine over 72 hours and it is stunning. It is approachable now and will easily age two decades."

Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This single-vineyard Riserva delivers a generous, abundant and determined personality. This is Brunello with a capital B. The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli benefits from a warm and sun-soaked microclimate that is shielded from cold winter winds. You can taste the good health of the grapes thanks to those very direct aromas of black cherry, plum, tar, campfire ash and chalky mineral. The Paganelli vineyard is 12 hectares in size, with vines planted in 1964. The last time this wine was made was in 2012. Fruit from those old vines shape complex aromas, elegant tannins and bright freshness. Despite that handsome DNA, this is another new release from Il Poggione that will require more cellar age."

Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Paganelli Riserva from Il Poggione keeps you at the edge of your seat, with a gorgeous display of herbal-tinged black cherry, sweet white smoke, cedar and cloves. The textures are silky and polished, as this coasts effortlessly across a core of salty minerals and bright acids, taking on a decidedly savory, umami note. There’s simply so much going on and so much to like about the 2015 Riserva, as balsamic spice, hints of wild herbs and tobacco form up toward the close over a coating of classically fine tannin. Tasting the 2015 Riserva, you could easily forget that it hails from a ripe vintage. This needs five or more years to unwind and should then excel for well over a decade in our cellars. Tasted twice and over the course of two days."

2019 IL POGGIONE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

Luca Gardini, Gardini Notes: "The great classicism of the Franceschi family in the readings of a Brunello among the staples of the denomination. Nose of freshness, pomegranate, touches of lemongrass and ginger, with citrusy hints. Briny tannins on the palate, recall of pomegranate and notes of ginger."

Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today."
