The 2023 Vosne‑Romanée 1er Cru from Drouhin shows a beautiful, deep color and an aromatic bouquet filled with violet, Morello cherry, wild berry, strawberry, and subtle spice, with hints of leather, camphor, and truffle emerging on the nose. On the palate it’s refined and silky—graceful tannins, vibrant but balanced acidity, and a strong mineral core that frames the fruit. There’s depth without weight, with flavors of red berries, fine earthy tones, and lingering finish. This is early in its evolution, with excellent drinking over the next 10‑20 years if cellared well.
Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880, is one of Burgundy’s most respected houses, with vineyards across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Their Vosne‑Romanée holdings are treated with the same care Drouhin applies everywhere: hand‑harvested fruit, low yields, careful sorting, use of indigenous yeasts, and oak ageing with a modest percentage of new barrels (often ~20‑25%) to support fruit rather than dominate. The soils—chalky marl, limestone—combined with Vosne’s classic exposure and microclimates, allow for elegance, depth, and perfume. Drouhin’s philosophy emphasizes aroma, minerality, and finesse, with Pinot Noir that reveals the vineyard’s soul rather than winemaking flash.
