Produttori del Barbaresco is one of the most respected and consistent cooperatives in the world of fine wine, and an essential pillar in the Barbaresco region. Founded in 1958—though with roots tracing back to 1894—it brings together around 50 local growers who collectively cultivate some of the best Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. The strength of the cooperative lies in its democratic structure and singular focus: producing world-class Barbaresco from Nebbiolo alone. Under the leadership of longtime director Aldo Vacca (retired in 2022), the winery became internationally renowned for quality, transparency, and a philosophy rooted in tradition, terroir, and balance.
The Barbaresco Riservas are the crown jewels of Produttori’s portfolio, released only in exceptional vintages. These nine single-vineyard Riservas are made with identical winemaking methods, allowing the pure character of each site to shine through. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended maceration on the skins. The wines are then aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks and an additional 9–12 months in bottle before release, resulting in structured, age-worthy wines that reflect both site and vintage with clarity and precision. Structured, age-worthy, and intensely expressive, these Riservas consistently punch well above their price point and are frequently compared to much more expensive Barolos. They offer one of the best opportunities for collectors and enthusiasts to explore the nuance of Barbaresco's terroirs through a single, unified lens.
It wasn’t easy—each of the wines clearly merits attention in its own right. But we felt it was time to focus the lens a bit more, to highlight the bottles that, in our view, are inching just a bit further ahead at this early stage. If you’re seeking a Barbaresco that embodies authenticity, tradition, and exceptional quality, Cascina Roccalini is a standout choice. Founded in 2004 by Paolo Veglio, this boutique winery is located in the heart of Barbaresco, where Paolo and his mother Luciana carefully cultivate about five hectares of vineyards in the renowned Roccalini cru. Their dedication to organic and biodynamic practices ensures that the wines truly reflect the unique terroir, with a limited annual production of around 20,000 bottles allowing meticulous attention to detail.
The Barbaresco Roccalini exemplifies the estate’s commitment to excellence. Made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and is aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels. This process imparts a deep ruby color and complex aromas of ripe red fruits, violets, and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine offers a harmonious balance of elegance and power, featuring silky tannins and a lingering, balsamic finish. The Roccalini cru itself has a prestigious reputation, having once supplied grapes to the legendary Bruno Giacosa. The ideal soil, exposure, and meticulous vineyard management come together to produce wines that are expressive, refined, and built for aging.
2023 Cascina Roccalini Nebbiolo Cascina Roccalini’s Nebbiolo 2023 is a vibrant and elegantly expressive wine, rooted in the heart of the Roccalini cru. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown on the estate, this wine undergoes traditional submerged-cap fermentation and extended maceration exclusively in concrete tanks, with indigenous yeasts and zero filtration or fining, preserving purity and site expression. Its production is limited—between approximately 3,000 and 5,000 bottles—highlighting its artisanal nature. On the nose, expect delicate aromas of violets, cherries, red berries, aromatic herbs, and earthy underbrush; on the palate, the wine is juicy, fresh, balanced, and enlivened by a savory, slightly salty finish. With a bright ruby hue, finely structured tannins, and lingering balsamic-spicy notes, it’s enjoyable now yet offers cellaring potential.

2021 Barbaresco “Roccalini” Cascina Roccalini’s 2021 Barbaresco “Roccalini” is a compelling expression of traditional Barbaresco, crafted with integrity and finesse by Paolo Veglio from his family’s organically farmed vineyards in the Roccalini cru. This site—once famously sourced by Bruno Giacosa—offers southwest exposure and clay-marl soils at around 300 meters elevation, lending the wine both structure and aromatic lift. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, typically in cement or stainless steel, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks for 12 to 18 months. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving purity and site transparency. Only about 5,000 bottles were produced in 2021, making it a limited and artisanal release.
In the glass, the 2021 shows a bright ruby color and an elegant aromatic profile of rose petals, violets, red cherries, and subtle spice, with hints of tobacco and licorice emerging with air. The palate is both refined and energetic, offering polished tannins, mineral tension, and a savory, balsamic finish. While already showing well, the wine has the structure and acidity to age gracefully. It delivers outstanding value for a cru Barbaresco of such provenance and personality—offering a rare opportunity to experience the depth of the Roccalini vineyard through the hands of its most intimate steward.
Cascina Roccalini’s Barbaresco pairs beautifully with aged cheeses, rich meat dishes, and traditional Piedmontese cuisine, making it a versatile companion to elevate any dining experience. This wine is an excellent choice for collectors and enthusiasts looking for a wine that marries tradition with artisan craftsmanship.

For nearly two centuries, the Rivetti family has cultivated vineyards in Neive, forging a legacy deeply intertwined with Barbaresco. The winery, located in the scenic hamlet of Bricco di Neive, is now led by Dante’s children—Ivan, Katia, and Mara—who uphold a philosophy rooted in sustainable viticulture and a deep respect for terroir, honoring the classic, elegant expression of the Nebbiolo grape. Dante Rivetti extended this tradition by bottling under the family name in the 1970s, minimizing the cellar, and emphasizing devotion to territory: a philosophy encapsulated in his guiding maxim, “Communicate the devotion for the territory with as much wine as possible” Dante Rivetti. His Barbaresco wines are celebrated for their structural finesse, enduring freshness, and the timeless elegance that emerges from long oak aging.
Dante Rivetti’s Barbaresco held the special affection of two of Italy’s most discerning wine personalities. Luigi Veronelli, the legendary wine critic and gastronome, counted Dante Rivetti among his favorites—impressing with the purity and character of his Barbaresco expression. Similarly, Gianfranco Soldera—renowned as a perennially demanding and principled winemaker—privileged only one Barbaresco as deserving of serious attention, naming Dante Rivetti’s example as his favored wine from that appellation.
Dante Rivetti Barbaresco Bricco de Neueis Riserva 1990. This is a wine that hasn’t been seen on the market in many, many years—these may very well be the last remaining bottles in existence, as none have surfaced anywhere in the world in recent times. This bottling marks a pinnacle of Nebbiolo craftsmanship. Its meditative poise penetrates the senses: on the nose, expect nuances of dried fruits, anise, licorice, leather, and prune melded with notes of cherry and cherry stones—a complex aromatic profile that reflects profound aging and structure. As a Riserva from a standout 1990 vintage, it flaunts a well-knit tapestry of freshness, ripe tannins, and a long, refined finish. This rare bottle transcends mere drinkability—it’s a piece of Barbaresco heritage, a near-mythic survivor, and truly a once- in-a-lifetime wine to behold.

The La Spinetta winery is a celebrated family-run estate founded in 1977 by Giuseppe “Pin” Rivetti and his wife Lidia in Castagnole Lanze, nestled between the Langhe and Monferrato regions of Piedmont. Initially devoted to elevating Moscato d’Asti—with pioneering single-vineyard bottlings like Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino—the estate expanded in the mid- 1980s as their children joined the business. Embracing red wine, they introduced iconic labels such as Barbera Ca’ di Pian and the homage blend “Pin.” By the mid-1990s, La Spinetta released its first Barbarescos: Gallina (1995), followed by Starderi (1996), Valeirano (1997), and Bordini—all adorned with the distinctive Dürer rhinoceros emblem. Under the stewardship of Giorgio, Carlo, and Bruno Rivetti, the estate now spans around 100 hectares in Piedmont, with additional holdings in Tuscany and the acquisition of the historic Contratto sparkling house in 2011. La Spinetta's viticultural philosophy emphasizes organic farming, low yields, and deep respect for indigenous varietals—principles that underpin the lush, expressive, and age-worthy wines that have earned the estate its reputation as one of Italy’s most dynamic and innovative producers.
