M. Chapoutier is one of the most iconic and historic wineries in the Rhône Valley, with roots tracing back to 1808. Based in Tain-l’Hermitage, the estate is now led by Michel Chapoutier, a visionary who took the reins in 1990 and revolutionized the winery through biodynamic viticulture and an uncompromising commitment to terroir expression. Under Michel's leadership, the domaine has expanded its holdings across both Northern and Southern Rhône, while also developing international vineyards. Today, M. Chapoutier is celebrated not only for its breadth of appellations but also for producing some of the most revered single-vineyard wines in France. What sets M. Chapoutier apart is its deep respect for nature, tradition, and innovation. The winery was among the first in France to label bottles with Braille—honoring a blind family friend—and it became a standard across its prestigious cuvées. Michel Chapoutier’s philosophy centers around biodynamics, minimal intervention, and showcasing the individuality of each vineyard plot. With holdings in Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Saint-Joseph, the domaine remains one of the Rhône’s most consistent and profound producers, shaping the modern narrative of Rhône wines. Today’s offering comes directly from the winery and all of the releases are part of the 2025 offering from the estate and as we all know especially with the older wines there in no better place to have rested all of this time than where they were birthed.
The Structured and Intense Whites of M. Chapoutier
As a white wine producer, Michel Chapoutier has redefined the heights that Rhône Valley whites can reach. His commitment to showcasing individual terroirs through single-vineyard
expressions has elevated varieties like Marsanne and Viognier to world-class status. Wines such as M. Chapoutier St-Péray Hongrie Blanc display finesse and freshness from a lesser-known AOC, while the M. Chapoutier Condrieu Invitare captures the exotic aromatics and oily texture of Viognier with poise and clarity. These whites are vinified with great precision, often seeing minimal oak and lees contact to let the purity of fruit and minerality shine.
Among his most celebrated whites are the Hermitage bottlings—each from a distinct lieu-dit. Les Granits Blanc from Saint-Joseph is mineral-driven and taut, a benchmark for Marsanne in the appellation. Moving to Hermitage, De l’Orée Blanc, from old vines in the Les Murets vineyard, delivers opulence and age-worthy complexity. Le Méal Blanc is rich and powerful, with honeyed notes and stony undertones, while L’Ermite Blanc, from vines near the Hermitage chapel, is austere in youth but unfolds into a regal, structured, almost Burgundian expression of Marsanne. These wines have helped reframe Rhône whites as serious, age-worthy wines on par with the best from Burgundy.

The Bold and Glorious Red wines of M. Chapoutier
As a red wine maker, Chapoutier's impact is even more profound. His reds—from Crozes- Hermitage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the grand terroirs of Hermitage—are known for their structure, depth, and ability to age gracefully. The Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonniers is a standout Syrah that punches well above its weight, with dark fruit and iron-laced minerality. In Saint-Joseph, wines like Le Clos Rouge and Les Granits Rouge demonstrate Chapoutier's mastery of steep granite slopes, offering power and elegance in equal measure. These reds balance Rhône rusticity with finesse, clearly expressing their terroir while being polished and modern.
At the top of the range, Chapoutier’s Hermitage reds are among the Rhône's most iconic. Le Méal Rouge is dense, muscular, and expressive of its sun-drenched slopes. Le Pavillon is a perennial collector's favorite, structured and intense with immense aging potential. L’Ermite Rouge, sourced near the summit of Hermitage hill, is pure, mineral, and cerebral—perhaps the most refined expression of Syrah in the region. In the Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Croix de Bois and Barberac showcase Grenache in its sunniest and most generous form. Meanwhile, Monier de la Sizeranne, a classic Hermitage, blends multiple parcels to represent the appellation in its totality. Michel Chapoutier's reds have not only defined excellence in the Rhône Valley but have set global benchmarks for Syrah and Grenache alike.
